The Year in Wayne County at a Glance
Wayne County is a hub of activities throughout the year with events that add to our quality of life. Here are some of those activities to put on your calendar:
In January, the Waynesboro Optimist Club hosts its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rally. A parade is also held in conjunction with the holiday. In addition, the Waynesboro Rotary Club’s Basketball Tournament is held during the month.

For February, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce sponsors its annual banquet, and the Ebonette Club of Clarke and Wayne Counties hosts its “Gems of the Universe” scholarship pageant.

March brings the annual Denham Volunteer Fire Department Yard Sale along with a “Day of Prayer” observance on the Wayne County Courthouse steps.

The Whistle Stop Festival rolls into town every April, drawing tens of thousands for the program. Relay for Life, a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, is held at Maynor Creek Water Park in April. The month also features the annual Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast and “Opening Day” festivities for Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball.

In May, students, parents and the community focus on graduation at Wayne County High School and Wayne Academy. Another major event is the annual Pineville Community Senior Citizens Day, which has honored local senior adults for the last three decades.

Summer arrives in June and so does the annual Waynesboro-Wayne County Library Summer Reading Program. Children are encouraged to read and take part in activities held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month.

July is hotter than a firecracker with the annual Red, White and Blueberry Celebration and Fireworks Show coinciding with the Fourth of July. The Town of State Line also recognizes the Fourth with a fireworks display. Another popular outdoor gathering during the month is the annual Waynesboro Fire Department Rodeo held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

In August, school starts and the football season begins.Unless you’ve lived a football season in Wayne County, you haven’t seen anything like it.

September traditionally means the annual Wayne County Fair makes its return to the Fairgrounds.

October features an assortment of happenings — the State Line Fall Festival, NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet and the Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department’s Haunted Trail at Maynor Creek Water Park.

There’s a lot to be thankful for in November with the annual Waynesboro Merchants’ Open House, which previews Christmas items on sale by retailers; the First State Bank Golf Ball Drop to benefit United Way; the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s Turkey Shoot; and the EucuttaVolunteer Fire Department’s “Opening Day of Hunting Season” Cook-Out.

In December, Christmas parades are held in both Waynesboro and State Line.
