Wayne County is also in proximity to a number of four-year institutions, including the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg along with the Mississippi State University-Meridian campus and William Carey University.
University of Southern Mississippi
The University of Southern Mississippi, known informally as Southern Miss, is a large public research university in nearby Hattiesburg, and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master, specialist and doctoral. The institution is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a "Research University" with "High Research Activity."
Founded March 30, 1910, USM is a dual campus institution, with the main campus in Hattiesburg and the Gulf Coast campus located at Long Beach, Miss. Other teaching sites include the John Stennis Space Center, Keesler Air Force Base and the Gulf Coast Research Lab.
The university has an extensive "study abroad" program through its Center for International Education, and is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the nation for the number of students studying abroad each year. It is especially noted for its flagship British Studies program, which regularly sends more than 200 students each summer to live and study in England.
The university is also home to a major polymer science research center, and one of the strongest fine arts programs in the southeastern United States.

Mississippi State University-Meridian
Mississippi State University-Meridian is an extended campus of a public, land-grant university whose mission is to provide access and opportunity to students from all sectors of the state’s diverse population and to offer excellent programs of teaching, research and service.
MSU-Meridian offers a range of programs that include business, education, the humanities along with social and behavioral sciences.

William Carey University
William Carey University is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Hattiesburg, and is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and Mississippi Baptist Convention.Beside the main campus in Hattiesburg, WCU has two subsidiary campuses in Biloxi as well as New Orleans, La.
William Carey University was founded 1906 as the Mississippi Woman's College, but changed its name to William Carey College in 1954 when the college became co-educational. In 2006, the school became William Carey University.
The college offers baccalaureate degrees in the areas of arts, humanities and sciences; education and psychology; business; religion; music; and nursing. The university also offers M.B.A, M.Ed., M.S. in psychology, M.S. in Health Information Systems, and an M.S.N. degree, as well as a specialist degree in elementary education and a Ph.D. in education administration.
